Hanging Bird feeder hand made in Ash
We made this hanging bird feeder to suit our turned bird houses. This is a "Clam shell" design which allows small birds to enter the 2.5" (7 cm) gap and feed from the seed filled bowl, protected by the overhanging roof. To fill the seed bowl simply slide the roof up the hanging strut.Birds love these feeders, we have a photo here of a Blue Tit taking seed from the feeder, so they do work! The seed bowl and hanging centre strut are hand turned from locally sourced English Ash. Bottom finial is also made from English Ash with Sweet Chestnut, there is a drainage channel with 2 x3mm holes to allow water to escape should any rain enter under the roof. The roof is hand turned from Sweet Chestnut , a favourite of ours as it is very resistant to weather. The dimensions are: Overall height 13" (33cm) the seed bowl is 7" (18cm) in diameter , 2" (5cm) deep and the roof diameter is 8.5" (21cm).The feeder has been finished with good quality oil. This is used to allow the roof to be moved with ease while protecting the wood and enhancing the grain.
We don't use varnish as eventually it flakes or cracks and is difficult to maintain.
Simply apply teak oil if necessary. Any damage caused by birds can be lightly sanded and oil reapplied.
These feeders do look good beside our turned Bird houses. They are a lovely addition to your garden and a great gift for both bird lovers and gardeners alike. These have proved very popular so if you see it has been sold just wait a few days then Dave will have made another.
